In the high-desert air of Indian Wells, the conditions often become the third player on the court.

On a blustery Saturday afternoon, World No. 3 Elena Rybakina found herself locked in a gritty, three-set battle that was less about the elegance of her ball-striking and more about her capacity for survival.

Facing a surging Hailey Baptiste, the 2023 champion was forced to dig deep into her mental reserves to secure a 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 victory, overcoming not just a formidable opponent, but a set of environmental variables that threatened to derail her title hopes.

From the first ball, it was clear that the standard Rybakina blueprint — domination through clinical serving and flat, aggressive groundstrokes — would need to be rewritten.

The wind was swirling across the Stadium court, playing havoc with ball tosses and turning the already heavy balls into unpredictable projectiles.

“Difficult first match,” Rybakina admitted afterward, her exhaustion still visible.

“Hailey played really well. She served good. Yeah, it was not easy. Also a little bit tricky with the wind, but overall happy of course with the win.”

The match began as a test of nerves. Baptiste, playing with the fearless aggression that has seen her climb the rankings, pressured the Kazakh star from the outset.

Rybakina found herself trailing and facing three set points in the opening frame, a moment where many might have folded under the weight of the blustery conditions and an inspired opponent. However, Rybakina’s response was a masterclass in staying present.

“I was a little bit rushing on the serve since it was windy,” she explained. “So I was just trying to play point at a time and not focus so much on the score, because in these conditions, anything can change quickly.”

That tactical patience paid off as she clawed her way back to take the first set in a tiebreak. Yet, the momentum was far from permanent. The slow courts of the “Tennis Paradise” were living up to their reputation, making it grueling to put the ball away.

As the second set began, the physical toll of the heavy conditions started to show. Baptiste doubled down on her variety, using a biting slice and a heavy forehand to keep Rybakina off balance.

“Yeah, it’s slow courts, quite heavy balls. It’s not easy to move them,” Rybakina noted. “I was just trying to stay in the match. Dropped a little bit the energy in the second set, but overall, happy that I found my way in the end.”

After losing the second set 2-6, the match felt like it was slipping away. Rybakina looked flat, her trademark power dampened by the air and the effort required to maneuver the heavy Wilson balls.

But champions are defined by their ability to find a second wind. In the decider, Rybakina managed to rediscover her rhythm, adjusting her feet to the wind and finding the solutions that had eluded her earlier in the afternoon.

Despite the final-set surge, Rybakina remained her own toughest critic. She was quick to point out that her tactical execution wasn’t where it needed to be for a player of her caliber.

“It was a bit better, but still, I would say that it’s not my best,” she reflected on the final set. “I should have find solution quicker, whenever I had the opportunity when I was up. Yeah, some decisions also was a bit wrong. Yeah, something for me to definitely work on.”

As she moves into the third round, Rybakina leaves the court with a win in the column but a long list of adjustments in her notebook.

In a tournament where the conditions are as much of an adversary as the person across the net, her ability to “find a way” when the energy was low might just be the most important weapon in her quest to reclaim the Indian Wells crown.
